Welcome to the Groupsite for Rosemary Antioxidants.

This site is a meeting place that provides members of the 'Rosemary Antioxidants' group with a shared calendar, discussion forums, photo gallery, files and member profiles.

Members of the group are working together on a collaborative project sponsored by the UK LINK Programme on Renewable Materials. Both industry and academic partners are represented, including: The National Institute of Agricultural Botany; Bangor University Composites Centre; Aston Univeristy; Boots-Alliance; Co-operative Retail; Croda International; Frontier Agriculture; Horticultural Development Council; Industrial Co-polymers; Lubrizol and Uponor Housing Solutions Limited.

We will investigate the use of rosemary to provide the raw materials for development of a new genre of Bio-based antioxidants. This project will examine facets of the value chain for the synthesis and testing of high quality, environmentally-sustainable antioxidants (AO) from rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), grown and processed in the UK. These will substitute for existing synthetic AOs and in some products will be both safer and more effective than synthetic alternatives. Antioxidants are a vital constituent of a broad range of materials. This is an opportunity to enable the totally green supply of lubricants, cosmetics/health products and polymers, especially packaging, thus catalysing market opportunity for much wider crop production for fossil fuel replacement (oilseeds, cereals etc) which would be used to manufacture these biological based products. The economics and chemistry of product development for these three generic industrial uses will be defined.

The work started on February 1st 2008 and will run for 30 months. For further information contact lydia.smith@niab.com
